The John W Callahan Heart Safe Project is to establish awareness, education and immediate access to Automated External Defibrillators (AED’s) throughout our community, so that San Luis Obispo is a Heart Safe County and City. AED’s Save Lives!
After the sudden death of John, Lynne was compelled to find a way to make sure that victims of Sudden Cardiac Arrest have the best possible chance of survival.
Statistics show that nearly 60% of all cardiac arrests take place out of the hospital setting and that up to 95% of victims die before they reach advanced care in the Emergency Department.
A victim’s chance of survival is reduced by 7-10% with every minute that passes without CPR and having an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) accessible within 2 minutes.
AED’s save lives. It is estimated that early access to an AED could save 40,000 lives per year in the U.S. alone.
These compelling statistics prove that there is a great need for AED placements in our community – thus the John W. Callahan Heart Safe Project has been established to provide our local communities with these life saving devices.
The generous donation of four AED’s donated in John’s memory by Sierra Vista Medical Center and French Hospital has been instrumental in seeing this project come to fruition.
